This is when Clay stepped in and did what he knew hid Dad could not and gave her permission to let go, telling her "That's enough, Mistake Maker" just like her father had all those years ago.Įdit: After posting my answer above I went back and reread this scene (and the following chapter) and I think Kathy has it right below. Michael knew how much Penny was suffering, but as much as he tried and knew it was the right thing he loved her too much to tell her to let go. She had pushed her body beyond its limits for suffering but no matter how tired she was she couldn't let go for the love of Michael, whom she knew would be devastated perhaps beyond recovery by her death. My reading of this scene was Penny had lived far past the six months the doctors had originally allotted for her. (view spoiler) [I don't believe Clay physically took her life.
